There are hundreds and hundreds of books about mindfulness. So if you want to start to explore what mindfulness is, where do you start? Good question. My shelf has many books on mindfulness. It’s very easy to find new authors publishing on this topic every day in any given book shop. But if you want my sincere opinion as a mindfulness scientist and practitioner I have to recommend you the book Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who brought and popularised in the Western world the practise of mindfulness meditation, in the early 80s with his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR).
This book is a very light read. In contrast to other books, whenever I read it I have the feeling that this is the real thing. Jon will not only tell you what mindfulness is but he will also introduce you to other important principles which will make your mindfulness practise stronger. Examples of these principles are the notion of letting go and acceptance of the present moment just as it is.
Overall, this book can completely immerse you in the philosophy of mindfulness. It’s not a book completely biased by a western or eastern vision – it is a wise friend that brings together the best of both worlds and to which you can come back to every time you feel disconnected from yourself and/or the world around you. From all the Mindfulness-related books I have, this is definitely my favourite.
