#7 Stop Labelling & Categorizing!

Every single one of us is guilty for doing this. It’s an especially tough thing to fix given how prevalent it is in society. I’m talking about labelling. Do this exercise on your way home from work today:

While you’re driving in your car or riding on the bus, become aware of how many times in your mind you labelled or categorized something!

Whatever it is! It may be something seemingly harmless such as:

  1. Thoughts about how pretty (or how ugly!) someone’s purse is.
  2. Thoughts about how awesome/crappy the weather is.
  3. Thoughts about how early/late you’ll reach home.
  4. Thoughts about how awesome/disastrous your day went.

The more you label, the less you see and experience life for what it is!

If you see everything simply the way it is, life will become beautiful! But if you go on placing labels to everything you like/dislike, you’re asking for problems.

#8 Become Aware Of Your Body’s Involuntary Functions!

95% of the time your body is running on auto mode i.e. your body is quietly functioning in the background without your knowledge. 5% of the time you’re aware and take control. An example of this may be during high intense activity such as playing a sport that requires rapid breathing. Another example is when you choose to intentionally take control for whatever reason (meditation, yoga etc.).

Becoming aware of your body’s involuntary functions can be incredibly liberating. You may not realize it now, but simply inhaling/exhaling can be an exuberant experience!

Don’t believe me? Spare 5 minutes every single day, and focus just on breathing. Forget about all the thoughts in your mind. Focused breathing has several benefits; I won’t go through all of them here, but if you wish to read up on them, here’s a good article!

#9 Try To Look At Life With Fresh Eyes Every Single Day!

This won’t be possible for those who lack a certain level of consciousness. For most people, preconceived notions, prejudices, opinions, and biases determine what reality looks and feels like.

If you can wake up in the morning with a completely fresh outlook on everything, you start to realize how beautiful life really is!

Easier said than done, right? I mean how are you supposed to have a fresh outlook, when your marriage is in turmoil, your job hanging by thread, and your debt continuing to pile. To a person with limited awareness, this seems impossible and even ridiculous! But to a person with a higher level of consciousness, this is quite achievable!

Your takeaway homework: When you’re on your way to work in the morning and you have a moment, stop to pay some attention to what’s happening around you.

  1. Notice the trees, and pay attention to the intricate details of the branches and leaves.
  2. Look at a blade of grass, and the soil on the ground. Pay close attention to how each blade of grass is different from the other!
  3. Look at the life around you, realize you’re a small speck in the overall scheme of things. Feel your ego start to dissolve as you come to this realization.

If you continue to do this every single day, you will slowly start to become more sensitive to life around you. Life is beautiful, you just need to open your eyes and start seeing it!

  1. This is a fantastic post! So many great tips. A massage regularly would be great and we definitely shouldn’t view it as a once a year treat! A monthly one sounds doable I think! I need to be more disciplined to meditate as find the day just runs away from me. Thank you for sharing x

    1. True and agree 100%… I never had the courage to book a professional massage though. I like to use the insight timer app because it shows how many days you’ve been meditating and it gives you a star when you accomplish a certain number of sessions in a row. These days I have been out of it too though! xx
