How to Remain Sane During COVID-19 Isolation Measures

I talked about it here before on the blog, but I thought it would be useful to share the three main coping mechanisms I have been using to make sure I keep as sane as possible during this isolation period that we are all currently living. In such a complex moment, we must take care of our wellbeing too.

Besides the need of focusing and practising patience towards ourselves and others, I believe there are many positive lifestyle changes we can embrace. In this post, I’m sharing three behavioural strategies have helped me a lot: healthy eating, physical activity, and alone time. Yes, alone time is extremely important when you are sharing your house with your family or mates, 24h a day!

Healthy Eating

We are what we eat, we already know that. What we may not know is that our food choices have a huge impact on our mood and emotional balance. If we indulge in foods that are a real combo of sugar and fat, we tend to get crankier and more irritable. Emotional reactions are harder to manage and you are more likely to lash out at someone.

It is also true that we tend to lash out at family members or close friends more easily, because there are higher levels of intimacy and illusory relationship comfort. What do I mean with this? Well, if you have been married for 57 years like my grandparents, you take that fact for granted and you won’t be as careful as you would be if you had just met your future husband. This is a great time to pay more attention to your words. Choose to be kind. And eat more wholefoods.

Physical Activity

Being physically active is always important. More so when you must stay at home. Whether you used to be always on the go or you didn’t move too much, this is a great opportunity to explore and learn more about the benefits of exercising for wellbeing and strengthening your immune system.

If you have been sedentary, go slow on it, but go. Start today and don’t postpone it. There are thousands of videos on YouTube with tutorials. I’m sure you will find something that fits you. From low impact cardio exercise to weight lifting and yoga, you have plenty to choose from. Here are my favourites: Yoga With Adriene, Fitness Blender and Hanna Öberg. Alone Time

I have been living with my grandparents since more serious isolation measures were nationally imposed. I don’t have as much time and quiet as I thought I would have. Most times, I feel like I have to give up the things I must do in order to offer my grandparents some quality time. In other words, I feel like I have to give them more attention so that they feel less anxious and depressed with the news and measures we have been requested to comply with.

Different generations living in the same house gets tricky sometimes. I had to adapt to their schedules and routine. I think that was the easiest part. The hardest part was finding the place and time to be alone. Literally alone. I get that much needed alone time when I go to the attic for my workout sessions and when I go to bed early. In fact, I choose to go to bed early because I know I won’t be disturbed until the following day. This allows me to unwind and be with myself.
