A Model of Wellbeing & Happiness

Martin Seligman, often considered as the “father” of Positive Psychology, proposed a model of wellbeing and happiness that includes the following 5 elements:

  • Positive Emotions
  • Engagement
  • Relationships
  • Meaning, and
  • Accomplishments

The PERMA model has been used worldwide to develop individual and organisational programs.

The Importance of Human Flourishing

Human Flourishing has been interchangeably used with human wellbeing in Positive Psychology.

It describes a broad range of states and relevant wellbeing outcomes such as:

  • mental and physical health,
  • happiness and life satisfaction,
  • meaning and purpose,
  • character and virtue,
  • interpersonal relationships

Human flourishing can thus be perceived as a complete state of human wellbeing due to its holistic outlook.
